Dr. Harold C. Connolly Jr.

Professor Connolly is founding Chair and a Professor of Geology of the Department of Geology at Rowan University. He is Co-Investigator and Mission Sample Scientist (MSS) and Co-Investigator of the OSIRIS-REx space mission, NASA’s New Frontiers 3 asteroid sample return mission. He is also a Co-Investigator of the Japanese Space Agencies asteroid sample return mission, Hayabusa2. He is a petrologist and geochemist who studies scientific problems in the fields of cosmochemistry, meteoritics, and planetary science with a goal of understanding how the rocky bodies of the Solar System, and their components, formed. As MSS of OSIRIS-REx, he oversees all the science team efforts behind the surface geology of asteroid Bennu, two of the four maps that feed into the sample site selection process, and all sample analysis of the returned asteroid material. He was a visiting professor at Hokkaido University in 2015. He has an asteroid named after him, is co-founder of the third mineral predicted to from in the Solar System, Krotite, a recipient of the U.S. Antarctic Service Medal form the Department of Navy, and a Fellow of the international Meteoritical Society.
